03.1. Data description

The demographic indicators calculated on an annual basis are the following:

The crude rate of population change is the ratio of the population change during the year to the average population in that year. The value is expressed per 1 000 persons.

The aging index of population is taken to be the ratio of the population aged 60 and over to the population aged 0-19 years, estimated in mid-reference year.

The average age of the population is the mean age of its members (arithmetic mean).

The total dependency ratio of the population is the ratio of the population aged 0-14 and 65 and over to the population aged 15-64, estimated in mid-reference year.

The young-age dependency ratio of the population is the ratio of the total number of young people aged 0-14 to the number of persons of working age (from 15 to 64).

The old-age dependency ratio is the ratio of the total number of elderly people at an age when they are generally economically inactive (aged 65 and over) to the number of working age persons (from 15 to 64).

The general mortality rate represents the ratio between the number of deaths and the estimated number of population in the reference year. The value is expressed per 1 000 persons.

The Total Fertility Rate is the most common period indicator of fertility, measuring the average number of live births a woman would ever deliver if she were to experience the fertility rate of a given period. It is computed as the sum of specific fertility rates by age, in their turn presenting the ratio of the number of live births to women of a given age to the number of women of the same age.

The general natality rate represents the ratio between the number of live births and the estimated number of population in the reference year. The values were given per 1000.

03.4. Statistical concepts and definitions

To calculate the indicator “crude rate of total population change”, the estimated population as of January 1st of year T and T-1 is used.

The indicators such as aging index, average age and dependency ratios are calculated based on mid-year population estimates.

The number of live births/deaths and population estimates are used for the general natality/mortality rates.

To calculate the total fertility rate, the number of live births by mother’s age and the estimated number of female population by completed mother’s age.

Since population estimates are calculated on the basis of population censuses and annual data on natural and mechanical movements, the concept of the "usual population" used in the census is retained in the definition of population estimates. Data collection is aligned with the definition of “usual population”.

The eventual difference in the birth rate by municipality compared to the Communication on Vital Events was due to the calculation of the estimated population based on the 2011 Census.
