Definition | |
Proportion of the population below the international poverty line is defined as the percentage of the population living on less than $3.00 a day at 2021 international prices.
Methodological explanations
The percentage of persons with disposable income lower than international poverty threshold, which is defined as daily disposable income in the amount of $3.00.
Aiming at elimination of differences in measuring poverty of people living in different countries purchasing power parities (PPP) were used. PPPs are types of currency exchange rates that are used to convert economic indicators expressed in local currencies to a common conventional currency.
As the socio-economic realities evolve, the international poverty line has to be periodically updated. The current threshold was set in June 2025. Prior to that, in the 2022 update the World Bank set the international poverty line at $2.15 (using the 2017 PPP), and before in the 2015 at $1.90 (according to the update from 2011).
