Definition | |
The prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) is an estimate of the proportion of the population whose habitual food consumption is insufficient to provide the dietary energy levels that are required to maintain a normal active and healthy life. It is expressed as a percentage. Undernourishment is defined as the condition by which a person has access, on a regular basis, to the amount of food that are insufficient to provide the energy required for conducting a normal, healthy and active life, given his or her own dietary energy requirements.
Methodological explanations
Undernutrition is defined as chronic hunger, a condition in which a person does not have an adequate amount of food necessary to provide the energy required for leading a normal, healthy, and active life, considering their individual energy needs in nutrition over a period of at least one year.
Method of calculation | |
The indicator is obtained as the cumulative probability that the habitual dietary energy intake is below the minimum dietary energy requirements (i.e. the lowest limit of the range of energy requirements for the population’s representative average individual).
