Global indicator name

Proportion of agricultural land area that has achieved an acceptable or desirable level of farm output value per hectare

Target

Proportion of agricultural area under productive and sustainable agriculture

Goal

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture

Definition and methodologyTop
Definition

It represents a measure of land productivity expressed through the value of outputs obtained from a given area of agricultural land.

Methodological explanations

Utilized agricultural land (UAA): Land area: kitchen gardens, arable land, meadows and pastures, and perennial crops on which agricultural production was carried out in the observed period.

The standard output of an agricultural product (crop or livestock), abbreviated as SO, is the average monetary value of the agricultural output at farm-gate price, in euros per hectare or per head of livestock.

Method of calculation

The calculation method uses a benchmarking system based on percentiles to assess the sustainability of farms according to the value of the standard agricultural output.
The standard output is calculated for each type of production on the holding— for every type of crop and permanent plantation, as well as for every type of livestock— and represents the average monetary value of agricultural production at producer prices that can be expected under ‘normal’ production conditions.
The producer price excludes direct payments (subsidies), value-added tax, product taxes, as well as transport and marketing costs.
The total value of the standard output is the sum of the individual standard output values of all agricultural products produced on the holding.
