Definition

The Agriculture Orientation Index (AOI)  for Government Expenditures represents the ratio of the share of agricultural expenditure in the central government's expenditure and the share of the gross value added (GVA) of agriculture in the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country.

Methodological explanations

Agriculture's share of government expenditure: This refers to the proportion of total government spending allocated to the agricultural sector. It includes government spending on policies and programs related to agriculture, such as land improvement, irrigation, animal health management, and research in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and hunting.

Agriculture's share of GDP: This represents the percentage of a country's gross domestic product (GDP) contributed by the agricultural sector, including agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and hunting. It reflects the economic value added by the agricultural sector relative to the total economic activity in the country.

Gross domestic product (GDP): GDP is the total monetary value of all finished goods and services produced in a country during a specified period, usually annually or quarterly. It serves as a broad measure of the overall economic activity and health of a nation, representing the economic output of various sectors, including agriculture, industry and services.

Method of calculation

The ratio of the share of agricultural expenditure (agriculture, forestry and fisheries) according to the International Functional Methodology (COFOG) at the central government level in total central government expenditure and the share of agricultural GVA in the country's GDP.
