Indicator

7.b.1 (12.a.1) Installed renewable energy-generating capacity in developing and developed countries

Global indicator name

7.b.1 (12.a.1) Installed renewable energy-generating capacity in developing and developed countries (in watts per capita)

Target

7.b By 2030, expand infrastructure and upgrade technology for supplying modern and sustainable energy services for all in developing countries, in particular least developed countries, small island developing States and landlocked developing countries, in accordance with their respective programmes of support

Goal

Goal 7. Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

Definition and methodologyTop
Definition

The indicator is defined as the installed capacity of power plants that generate electricity from renewable energy sources divided by the total population of a country. Capacity is defined as the net maximum electrical capacity installed at the year-end and renewable energy sources are as defined in the IRENA Statute.

Methodological explanations

The installed capacity of renewable electricity generation plants, relative to the total population of a country, is a major part of the energy supply chain that can be easily measured. Calculating renewable electricity generation capacity per population is proposed in order to scale capacity data and to take into account the large variations in needs between different countries. The scale of the data is based on population, not GDP, as it is the most basic indicator of demand for modern and sustainable energy services in a country.

Capacity is defined as the net maximum installed electricity capacity at the end of the year, and renewable energy sources are defined by the methodology of the EU Energy Statistics Regulation 1099/2008 and its Amendments, as well as the IRES (International Recommendations for Energy Statistics) recommendations.

Method of calculation

The calculation is performed by dividing the capacity for electricity production from renewable sources at the end of the year by the estimated total number of the country's population, observed in the middle of the year (July 1).

Element - Net maximum capacity

Annual energy statistics (Annex B of Regulation 1099/2008) and Five Joint Annual questionnaires of Eurostat and the International Energy Agency are used for the element net maximum capacity for electricity production from renewable sources. International Annual questionnaires for electricity and thermal energy, coal, natural gas, oil and oil derivatives and renewable energy sources) are submitted to Eurostat, the International Energy Agency and the United Nations, in accordance with the deadline set by Eurostat.

Capacity is defined as the net maximum capacity for electricity production from renewable sources at the end of the year. The capacity at the end of the year represents the capacity that was active at the end of the previous year + connected capacities in the observed year - withdrawn capacities in the observed year. The definition of capacity and energy sources is done according to the Energy Statistics methodology given in Regulation (EU) 1099/2008 and IRES (International Recommendations for Energy Statistics).

For element Estimation of Population of mid-year (July 1st) - Population estimate.

Population data:
Population estimations are based on the results of the Census of Population and the results of statistical processing of the natural and mechanical movements of the population. Population estimate is the average estimated number of inhabitants in the year of observation.
P (average, year t) = (Pp (January 1st year t) + Pk (December 31st year t)) / 2; t being the year of observation.
The data sources are SORS - census and vital statistics
