Definition

Domestic material consumption (DMC) measures the annual amount of raw materials extracted and used in the national economy, increased by the difference between physical imports and physical exports.

Methodological explanations

Per-capita DMC describes the average level of material use in an economy – an environmental pressure indicator – and is also referred to as metabolic profile.  

Method of calculation

Domestic material consumption per capita, by type of raw material (tonnes), is calculated as:

DMC per capita=  DMC/(Annual average population)
