This indicator shows how much of GDP is used for research and development in general.

Methodological explanations

Scientific research activity is a systematic creative work undertaken to discover new knowledge, with the aim of raising the general civilizational level of society and utilizing that knowledge in all areas of social development.

 

R&D Expenditures, or in other words Gross Domestic Expenditures on R&D (GERD) is total intramural expenditure on R&D performed in the national territory during a specific reference period. GERD covers all expenditure for R&D performed in the economy, including both current costs and capital expenditures for R&D.

Method of calculation

The indicator shows gross investments in research and development by: government, higher education, business and non-profit sectors, expressed as their percentage share in GDP.
