Definition

The researchers (in full-time equivalent) per million inhabitants is a direct measure of the number of research and development workers per 1 million people.

Methodological explanations

A researcher is a person with at least tertiary educational attainment, i.e. having at least completed undergraduate academic studies and who is engaged in R&D work, and holding the title pursuant to the law.

 

Full-time equivalent (FTE) is a unit of measurement of employees, which allows to compare the employees even though they work a different number of hours within the working week/year. 

Method of calculation

For the calculation of indicator Researchers, expressed in terms of full-time equivalent, available data on researchers and estimated number of inhabitants per million inhabitants were used.
